Chen Yuan, born in Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province in 1983, suffers from congenital cerebellar ataxia, resulting in unclear speech and an unsteady gait. At the age of 19, she was compelled to leave school after finishing the first grade of junior high school. She experienced despair, shed tears, and even contemplated suicide. However, the profound love and support from her grandmother helped her regain her strength, and she began the challenging journey of self-study and writing. Her perseverance has paid off, and she is now a member of the Sichuan Writers Association. Additionally, she has been invited to deliver inspirational speeches at various schools. She has been interviewed and featured in several media outlets, including the Sichuan Daily and Sichuan TV. In 2008, the devastating Wenchuan earthquake left her homeless. Despite this, she managed to enter a rehabilitation center and used her own story to encourage children who were injured and disabled in the earthquake. In the spring of 2011, she realized her dream of attending university and decided to pursue a degree in social work. Her choice was influenced by the kindness she had received and her desire to assist others. In 2012, she was diagnosed with dystonia, which made her movements increasingly difficult. Nevertheless, with her indomitable spirit, she completed a heartwarming and poignant autobiographical novel, She Raised Me Up, telling the story between a disabled child and her grandmother.
The novel is not embellished with elaborate language or intricate plots, but it uses simple words to narrate the tale of a compassionate and determined elderly woman raising her granddaughter who has congenital cerebral palsy. However, the novel possesses a power that strikes directly at the heart.
